TFT End-Game Positioning: How to Secure 1st Place (Pre-April 15 Reset)

The April 15 set reset is less than two weeks away. You are sitting at 90 LP, desperately needing one good game to reach the next tier. You reach the final 1v1 matchup against another player. Your board is stronger. You have better augments. You are ready to secure that 1st place finish.

Then, disaster strikes. You forget to scout. The enemy positions their main crowd control unit perfectly, locking down your main carry for five seconds. You lose the fight, take 2nd place, and lose the chance to promote.

This is the pressure of the late game. In Teamfight Tactics, your positioning determines the difference between a 2nd place finish and a glorious 1st place. Here is how you master the hex grid and maximize your LP.

1. The “Last Second Swap” (Carries & Frontline)

If you position your main carry in the same corner every single round, you are giving your opponents a free win. They will easily predict your setup and position their own team to counter you.

The Fix: You need to master the art of the last-second swap. During the final 3 seconds of the preparation phase, actively scout your opponent’s board. Swap your main carry from the bottom-left corner to the bottom-right corner at the very last moment. Simultaneously, swap your main tank to ensure they absorb the most important enemy spells. This last-second switch is essential to avoid being targeted by high-priority enemy items like Zephyr or Shroud of Stillness.

2. Spreading Out vs. Grouping (Countering AoE)

The decision to spread your units out across the hex grid or group them together into a tight ball should change every single game based on your opponent.

The Fix:

  • Spread Out: If your opponent has powerful Area of Effect (AoE) champions that deal damage in a wide radius, you must spread your team out. This forces their spell to only hit one or two units, minimizing their impact.

  • Group Up: Conversely, if your opponent relies on specific buffs (like certain augments that empower grouped units), you must bunch your team together into a tight formation to maximize your own stats and overwhelm them.

3. Anticipating Enemy Positioning Traps

High elo players don’t just position themselves; they manipulate you into positioning poorly. They might leave an empty space on their board, baiting you to put your assassin there, only to trap them.

The Fix: Think one step ahead. Do not just blindly use your Zephyr item. If you have a Zephyr, hover it over different enemy units and wait until the very last moment to predict where they will move their carry. It is better to use your utility items to neutralize an annoying enemy utility tank than to try a 50/50 predict and completely miss.

Mastering the Late Game Pressure

Applying these positioning fundamentals during the final, high-pressure 1v1 situations takes nerves of steel. With the chaos of the new set dropping on April 15, learning the positioning patterns of dozens of new champions on day one will be overwhelming.
